Therapy
We are in San Pedro, in the harbor, and we work with the ILWU plans. Confidential therapy with licensed clinicians who understand what the work actually costs.
That is a different organization. The ILWU-PMA Coastwise Indemnity Plan is a health plan administered through the union, and we are not affiliated with it. Coastwise Health is a therapy practice on 7th Street in San Pedro. We do work with that plan, so if you are a member looking for a therapist, you are in the right place after all.
Our clinicians live here. We are in San Pedro, a few minutes from the terminals, and the longshore community is not an abstraction to us. We know what the shift schedules do to a marriage, what years on the docks do to a back and a set of knees, and what it is like to work somewhere that word travels fast.
The work is hard. It is exhausting physically, and it is exhausting mentally, and those two things are not separate. Taking care of your mental health is not a departure from taking the job seriously. It is part of taking the job seriously, and it belongs in the same conversation as everything else the contract covers.
Rotating shifts, call-outs, and a body that does not switch off when the shift ends.
The flatness that creeps in after years of the same grind, or after an injury changes what you can do.
Accidents on the dock, near misses, and the things you were expected to walk away from.
What irregular hours and long absences do to the people at home, and how to repair it.
Treated here as ongoing individual therapy with clinicians certified in addiction counseling, not a program.
When the work has taken more than it is giving back and something has to change.
Care is one-to-one and ongoing, built around your schedule rather than a fixed program. You see the same clinician each time. See everything we treat, or how each approach works.
Talk therapy is the foundation, and for most people it is enough. For some it is not, and we would rather say so than stretch one approach to cover everything.
For trauma that talking about has not moved, including incidents on the job.
For depression and PTSD that have not responded to standard treatment. Screened first, and always paired with therapy.
For stress that lives in the body, which after twenty years on the waterfront it usually does.
We work extensively with the union plans and we know how they differ from each other. You do not need to have it figured out before you call.
Tell us what you carry and we will walk you through how it applies. We give you the guidance; we do not check your benefits for you, and nothing you tell us is binding. More on insurance.
Nothing is shared with your employer, the union, or anyone else without your written consent. If you would rather not be seen walking into an office near the harbor, we see clients securely by video anywhere in California.
No. That is a separate organization that shares our name. We are Coastwise Health, a therapy practice at 1366 W 7th Street in San Pedro. We are not able to help with claims or provider-portal access, but we do work with that plan if you are looking for a therapist.
Not from us. Nothing leaves this practice without your written consent, every time. That holds whether you pay through insurance or privately.
Yes. We schedule around rotating and irregular hours, and sessions can be in person in San Pedro or by secure video from anywhere in California, so travel and schedule changes do not end your care.
Yes. We see partners, teens, and families, and a lot of what brings people in is the strain the work puts on the people at home rather than on the member alone.
Call us and ask. We will tell you how your ILWU coverage applies, what the first few weeks look like, and which of our clinicians would be the right fit. No pressure, no obligation.
