Who he works with

Many of the people Dr. Bond works with are highly capable and successful in important areas of their lives, yet find themselves struggling in their relationships, families, or internal lives. The qualities that help someone succeed professionally (independence, persistence, self-reliance, high standards, and a strong sense of responsibility) do not always translate easily to intimacy, vulnerability, parenting, or emotional well-being. Dr. Bond helps clients understand these tensions and develop more flexible and effective ways of responding to them.

What it is like to work with Dr. Bond

Dr. Bond's work is grounded in attachment theory, developmental psychology, and the study of emotion regulation. He is particularly interested in how people learn to navigate closeness, independence, dependence, vulnerability, conflict, separation, and repair, and how patterns established in earlier relationships and developmental experiences can continue to shape adult relationships, parenting, work, and self-understanding.

His approach is thoughtful, direct, collaborative, and practical. He believes good therapy requires both depth and movement: understanding a person and the origins of a pattern matters, but insight is most useful when it leads to meaningful changes in how someone lives, relates, and responds.

Rather than applying a single model or preset formula to every client, Dr. Bond develops an individualized understanding of the psychological, relational, and developmental factors contributing to each person's difficulties. He then draws from evidence-informed approaches including Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT), psychodynamic and attachment-based approaches, and his academic background in human development and emotion regulation.

This allows therapy to address both immediate concerns and the deeper patterns that may sustain them. Dr. Bond often helps clients examine patterns involving attachment, emotional regulation, identity, self-worth, relationships, work, and family life, while working strategically toward concrete changes in the areas that matter most to them.

Background

Dr. Bond earned his PhD in Positive Developmental Psychology from Claremont Graduate University, where his primary research focused on attachment and emotion regulation. His training in developmental psychology continues to inform his clinical work, particularly his understanding of how relationships, developmental experiences, and transitions across the lifespan shape adult functioning.

He earned his undergraduate degrees in Psychology and Sociology, with a minor in English, from Gonzaga University. Before graduate school, he taught through Teach For America while completing a master's degree in Education at the University of Hawaiʻi.

In addition to maintaining an active clinical practice, Dr. Bond teaches at Arizona State University. His academic work has included attachment, emotional development, family relationships, fatherhood, and human development, and he has developed university-level coursework focused specifically on attachment relationships.

Across both his clinical and academic work, Dr. Bond is interested in translating psychological science into something genuinely useful: helping people understand themselves and their relationships more clearly while also making changes that improve the way they live.

Understanding why a pattern exists matters, but insight is most useful when it helps you live differently. My goal is to help clients understand themselves deeply and use that understanding to make meaningful changes in their relationships and lives.Dr. David Kyle Bond, PhD
