What it is like to work with Maureen

Maureen brings a warm, thoughtful, and highly attuned approach to therapy. Whether she is working with an individual processing trauma or a couple caught in a painful relational cycle, she helps clients understand not only what is happening, but what may be driving their reactions beneath the surface.

With couples, Maureen works from the understanding that we are wired to need connection, yet even strong relationships can become caught in negative cycles where each partner's attempts to protect themselves inadvertently push the other away.

Using attachment science and Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT), she helps couples recognize their particular dance, uncover the longing underneath the conflict, and develop safer, more effective ways of expressing that longing and reconnecting.

Trauma and EMDR

With individuals, trauma work is a significant part of Maureen's practice. As an EMDRIA-certified EMDR therapist, she uses EMDR extensively to help clients process traumatic and distressing experiences that may continue to affect their emotions, relationships, sense of safety, and day-to-day lives. Her work is paced carefully around the individual, with particular attention to safety, readiness, and emotional regulation.

For clients experiencing dissociation, depersonalization, derealization, or parts-based internal experiences, Maureen takes a steady, phase-oriented approach emphasizing stabilization, grounding, and appropriate pacing.

Maureen also integrates CBT-based strategies from the Recovery International self-help method to support emotional regulation, realistic thinking, and resilience between sessions.

Specialized training

Maureen is an EMDRIA-Certified EMDR Therapist and has advanced training in Emotionally Focused Therapy through the International Centre for Excellence in Emotionally Focused Therapy (ICEFT).

Her training reflects the two central areas of her practice: helping couples build stronger, more secure relationships, and helping individuals heal from trauma and distressing experiences.

Background

Before becoming a therapist, Maureen trained as a performer, spending two years each at the Juilliard School of Drama and the Boston Conservatory of Music and building an earlier career in the performing arts.

That background continues to shape how she sees her clients, particularly her belief in each person's creative capacity for growth and change.

Maureen later earned a Bachelor of Liberal Arts from Antioch University and a Master of Arts in Psychology from California Southern University before becoming a Marriage and Family Therapist.

I love helping couples and families understand their particular dance, making the connections between what the underlying need is and more adaptive ways to express that need, thereby bringing a feeling of safety and connection.Maureen Teefy, MA, LMFT
